I found out Friday that the poster I did for Birdfest is going to be featured in the Icograda World Design Congress in Beijing. The exhibit, Post__: Contemporary International Poster Retrospective, will showcase 300 award-winning posters from the past 30 years. A selection of posters from previous international graphic design competitions will be shown, as well as iconic Chinese posters produced after 1978. Oh, and the exhibition will take place in the Underwater Corridor gallery of China’s National Center for the Performing Arts. (How freaking cool is that?) The director for the Type Directors Club contacted HBA about being included in the show. TDC was asked to give just 20 posters from the last 10 Typography annuals to be included in the exhibit.
When I graduated from school, the only design annual I really wanted to get into was Typography. I was a type nerd, and as far as I was concerned, that was the pinnacle. I’ve been fortunate enough to get work in twice. So the fact that they want this to be included in the 20 they’re sending to this exhibit just blows me away. But even better in my mind, is that even though I was the one that actually designed the poster, it was based on an art piece the entire studio worked on for auction at Birdfest. I just pulled bits and pieces from it to include, along with a few other ideas I had.
Now, if I can just find a way to convince them to pay for a road trip to Beijing…

Congratulations. Great news Kris. You can at least follow it on Google Earth if you can’t actually go.
